Homeroom
Directed by Elise Marinkovich
Francis Parker School
Spring 2016
Homeroom was a perfect play for our middle school students as it really reflected their lives. We wanted to keep the set simple, so that it could serve as the different areas of the school. Two locker units and a bunch of acting blocks were the basis of the set design. The backs of the lockers featured murals of a park, for the outdoor lunch and cheer scenes. We also had a lot of stools for the classroom scenes, while the lockers were used for hall and passing scenes.
Because of the sparse set, we also kept the lighting simple, just featuring a few gobos and some basic colors. The only "realistic" gobo was the trees for those outdoor scenes. Then there were a few "artistic" gobos used on the cyc to accent certain songs.
While the three added songs were provided by the choreographer/director, I was responsible for the rest of the sound design. For sound effects, this primarily consisted of school bells and voice overs. In terms of mic plot, there was quite a bit of figuring to make sure that the proper people had mics when they needed them.
