Venus

For Venus, our scenic designer came up with a very compartmentalized set. Actors performed on small platforms that rose like islands from the stage. This called for a lighting design that was very carefully focused and shuttered. We also had moveable projection screens that were placed around the stage, so the lights needed to be carefully angled so as not to wash these out. All in all it was a very challenging, but fun, design.
My inspiration was the way light becomes dappled and colorful beneath trees. To this end, the lighting design was very colorful, and I used a lot of gobos to break up the pools of light.
