Urinetown

Urinetown was our summer production, and as such, I had a shorter than usual amount of time to create it. Going from zero, through design, to build, and then show in just four weeks, all while the actors were on stage all day, called for a very simple design.
I chose to go with a set of flats - some stationary and some on wheels - to create the different locations. For example, one wheeled flat was painted to look like the Amenity’s second wall one one side. When flipped around, it covered the Amenity’s sign with a brick wall, turning it into a street corner. Another wall was the wooden door to the secret hideout, and moved all over the stage, covering the other walls as needed.
The lights were also integral to creating these locations, both through the use of gobos and the use of shadows to create the trip to Urinetown.
