25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Directed by Mark Femia
Francis Parker School
Spring 2016
Spelling Bee is usually set in a gym, thanks to Coneybear's line, and we went the same route. I painted the floor to look like a court and created a basketball backboard/hoop to hang on the cyc. I also designed and created freestanding bleachers for the contestants to sit on. The rest of the show is focused on props, with fun details like juice boxes, twirling ribbons, and a trophy.
For the lighting, I wanted to contrast with the bareness of the gym setting. I wanted bright colors to emphasize the songs, as we delve into the children's imaginations. Using these bright, bold colors on the cyc was really fun, and gave each scene and song a different look.
